What Do Belts Do?

You have three kinds of belts under the hood. Your timing belt helps the crankshaft turn the engine camshaft and synchronizes the movement of the valves and pistons. If it breaks, your engine will stop running. If your model is newer, though, it may feature a more durable timing chain instead.

The two other two belt types are serpentine and drive belts. Serpentine belts work with your tensioner, crank pulley, and idler pulley to run such parts as the alternator and power steering. Hoses are responsible for directing fluids to and from parts such as the radiator and engine. In this case, coolant flows from the radiator to the engine and then back again, keeping the engine running at the right temperature.
